Marriage Notes for Maria Busse and Joseph Wieghaus:

Joseph and Elizabeth are listed in the 1850 Census for Kenton County, Kentucky.  Joseph's age was given as 28 years and his occupation was a cooper.  Elizabeth's age was given as 26 years.  Both were born in Germany.

Joseph and Elizabeth lived most of their married life near 12th and Scott Streets in central Covington, Kenton Co., KY.  Evidence of this is found in the Covington City Directories.  The 1861 directory lists Joseph "Wickhous'" as a cooper and residence on the east side of Scott Street between 12th and 13th Streets.  In 1869, Joseph was employed as a cooper at the John Hubenburg & Co., located on the south side of Trevor Street between Greenup and Scott Streets.  A cooper is one who makes and repairs barrels or tubs.  Joseph and Elizabeth eventually moved to a house at 6 Trevor Street.  They remained there the remainder of their lives.

This couple is found in several records of Mother of God Catholic Church located on 5th Street and St. Joseph Catholic Church formally located on the northwest corner of 12th and Greenup Streets in Covington.  The first Mother of God record is that of their marriage in 1849.  Several of their childred were baptized at this church.

The first St. Joseph record found is a baptism record for their son Joseph Henry in February 1859.  Several other children were baptized at St. Joseph Church.  It is in these records that I found further evidence of where Joseph and Elizabeth lived in Germany.  The baptism record for their daughter Mary Elizabeth, born October 8, 1860, shows that Joseph came from Neukirchen, Oldenberg and Elizabeth from Goldstetten, Oldenberg.

After Joseph's death in 1879, Elizabeth continued to live on Trevor Street.  At the time of her death on January 27, 1908, she was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Josephine and George Resing at the Trevor Street home.

It is believed that Joseph and Elizabeth had a total of 11 children.  In the 1900 census, it was recorded that Elizabeth had a total of 11 children.  I have been able to verify, with some certainty, all 11 children.

Details of this family can be found in the Wieghaus Section

Marriage Notes for J Wieghaus and Mary Busse:

The following story was told to me on 2/1/1998 by Jeff Owens, husband of Paula Wieghaus, as told by his father-in-law and his wife's uncle:  "There was a condiderable amount of friction caused by the marriage of Joseph "Jr." to Maria Busse, his cousin.  This supposedly caused him to be refused burial rights in the original family plot.  Hence the new plot, Sec 5, Lot 301."
